The Musée d'Orsay building was originally a train station for electric trains, founded for the Universal Exhibition hosted in Paris in 1899.
The train station's platforms became quickly obsolete as train design grew by leaps and bounds. The metal structure, covered in limestone to match the nearby Louvre and Musee l’Orangerie, was used in many different ways, from mail sorting during World War II, to setting for movies, until the restoration to transform it in the world-class museum we all know started in the early 1970s.
