Barceloneta Beach

Throughout his apprenticeship, Picasso often delved into landscape painting, particularly exploring seascapes. This interest was likely influenced by the fact that all the cities he had lived in until then were seaports. Additionally, the proximity of all his homes to a harbor presented the young painter with abundant opportunities to capture the inspiring surroundings in his works.

Lola, the artist`s sister

Until the year 1900, Dolores (Lola) Ruiz Picasso was a frequent subject for the artist, along with his closest relatives. However, as Picasso started moving away from the academic influences he received at home (from his father) and at the School of Fine Arts, his models shifted from being primarily family members to friends and acquaintances taking center stage.

Jacqueline

Upon Jacqueline Roque (1927–1986) entering Picasso's life in 1952, she sparked a new wave of creativity in his work, and her image swiftly became a consistent presence in his artistic output. Not only did Picasso create around two hundred portraits of Jacqueline, but her spirit also infused all of his feminine figures, showcasing the profound influence she had on his artistic expression. The two eventually married in 1961.

First Communion

"First Communion" marked Picasso's inaugural venture into large-scale artwork. This canvas was painted in the studio of José Garnelo Alda, as Picasso pursued further training based on his father's guidance.

Science and Charity

In the early months of 1897, Picasso initiated the creation of the expansive canvas titled "Science and Charity" as part of his efforts to establish a stronger presence in the Spanish art scene. Adhering to the principles of Social Realism prevalent in the late nineteenth century, this artwork marked the conclusion of his initial period of artistic endeavors.

Las Meninas [Infanta Margarita María]

Picasso created fourteen out of the forty-five interpretations of "Las Meninas" specifically dedicated to Princess Margarita, the central figure in Velázquez’s composition. Born to King Philip IV and Queen Mariana of Austria, Princess Margarita later married her uncle Leopold I, ascending to the titles of Empress and Consort of the Holy Roman Empire.

The Pigeons

During the creation of the "Las Meninas" suite, Picasso temporarily shifted his focus from analyzing Velázquez's body of work to produce nine oil paintings portraying the young pigeons he observed in the pigeon-loft of his studio in La Californie. The influence of the Mediterranean, with its distinctive light and colors, recalls his earlier works in Antibes. Picasso incorporated characteristic palm trees and vegetation from the surroundings of La Californie, clearly establishing the landscape within the Bay of Cannes.

Jaume Sabartés with Ruff and Bonnet

This portrait of Jaume Sabartés was created during the second phase of their friendship, which commenced in 1935 when Picasso invited him to take on the role of his secretary.

Self-Portrait with Wig

The museum contains an extensive collection of Picasso's early self-portraits. This assortment encompasses pieces created during his training period, featuring drawings with sketches and caricatures.
