This scenic cycling tour takes you along the Brenta Riviera, where over 3,000 villas were built between the 15th and 18th centuries, blending agriculture, art, and aristocratic leisure. After a comfortable water bus ride from Venice, you'll hop on your bike and ride through quiet roads and canal-side paths surrounded by gardens, rivers, and architectural masterpieces.

Highlights include Palladian gems such as Villa Foscari “La Malcontenta”, the romantic Villa Widmann Rezzonico Foscari, and the grand Villa Pisani, often called the “Versailles of Venice.”

Meeting Point: Zattere, Venice

We’ll begin at Zattere, the sunny promenade along the Giudecca Canal, once a key port for logs transported from the mainland via the Brenta. “Zattere” means “rafts” — a nod to the timber trade that helped build Venice itself.Our journey begins at Zattere, the historic waterfront promenade in Dorsoduro, known for its stunning views of Giudecca Island and Palladio’s Church of the Redentore. This location was once the landing point for logs transported via the Brenta River to Venice, giving the area its name ("Zattere" means rafts in Italian).

Water Bus to Fusina – Gateway to the Brenta Riviera

A scenic ride on the water bus takes us to Fusina, once the transition point from Venetian boats to horse-towed barges (burchielli) that carried the nobility upriver. This is where our cycling adventure begins.

Riding Along the Brenta – A Historic Waterway

We’ll follow quiet secondary roads and bike paths tracing the course of the Brenta River — the historic axis connecting Venice with Padua. Once a bustling artery of trade and aristocratic travel, today it's a peaceful and scenic countryside route ideal for cyclists of all levels.

Villa Foscari “La Malcontenta”

Our first stop is a jewel of Renaissance architecture. Designed by Andrea Palladio, this villa’s austere façade hides a world of frescoed elegance. Legend says it was named after a noblewoman exiled here for her “melancholy”—or her rebellion.

Villa Widmann Rezzonico Foscari – Rococo Splendor

We continue to this charming 18th-century residence with its Murano glass chandeliers shaped like sea monsters, a grand ballroom for masked balls, and a lush garden with fountains and statues. A vivid portrait of aristocratic leisure.

Villa Barchessa Valmarana – A Hidden Gem

Although the original villa was partly demolished, the preserved barchessa (former guesthouse) still dazzles with frescoes by Michelangelo Schiavoni, depicting noble feasts and historical dramas.

Villa Pisani – The "Versailles of Venice"

A palace of power, intrigue, and opulence. With 114 rooms, a legendary labyrinth, and Giambattista Tiepolo’s masterpiece in the grand hall, Villa Pisani has hosted emperors, doges, and scandalous love stories.

Our final stretch leads to Dolo, a picturesque town once vital to Venetian river trade. Here you’ll find ancient watermills, historic boatyards (squeri), and charming canal locks still intact.

Return to Venice by Bus or Train

After dropping off the bikes, we’ll head back to Venice comfortably by public bus or train — your choice. As we return, we’ll carry with us the stories, architecture, and atmosphere of a world where time still moves at the pace of the river.
